Database 2
New Cumnock Connections

The original intention of this project was to investigate the names of those soldiers who appear on the various war memorials which are to be found in our village. However, as time went on, it became obvious that not everyone who fought and died in the World Wars was commemorated on a memorial. The reasons for this are lost in the mist of time.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission database can produce a list of names for a particular village, town or city, but only if the casualty has provided that information in the first place and it has been spelled correctly.

The Soldiers Died in the Great War database can also produce a list of names of where soldiers were born (b), enlisted (e) or resided (r)

The following list shows those soldiers with a New Cumnock connection who do not appear on the Village War Memorial but may be commemorated elsewhere.

From the Cumnock Chronicle of February 7th 1919

Died on the way home - Mrs McCartney, West Park farm, has received definite, though unofficial news, that her husband, Pte. William McCartney R.S., died of dysentry in a Belgian hospital on the 20th November. Pte. McCartney was taken prisoner of war in the March offensive, as has already been reported, and nothing had been heard of him for a long time. He was released at the Armistice broken in health, and the treatment which should have saved him came too late. Pte. McCartney was 32 years of age and leaves a widow and one child, for whom much sympathy is felt.

From the CWGC database - Pte William McCartney, 375602, 13th Bn. Royal Scots, died 19th November 1918 and is buried at St. Symphorien Military Cemetery, Mons, Belgium, ref I B 5. This cemetery contains the graves of some of the first and last soldiers killed in the First World War.

From the Cumnock Chronicle of August 1918 we learn that Pte. McCartney was held prisoner at Stammlager Camp, Parchin, Mecklenberg, Germany.
